7 things to know this week at Meriden, Wallingford, Southington, Cheshire

Things to know this week include a public hearing on the town budget in Southington, a budget presentation in Meriden, discussion of federal funding for a camp voucher program in Meriden and setting aside design funds for the historic train station in Wallingford.

In Cheshire, the Town Council will hold a public hearing on school spending.

Here’s our list of seven things to know locally as you start your week.

1. Public hearing on town budget, Southington

Town residents will be able to comment on the town’s spending plan for the upcoming fiscal year at a public hearing Monday.

The Board of Finance has a public hearing planned for 7 pm at DePaolo Middle School, 385 Pleasant St.

The finance board has been conducting budget workshops with various town departments to put together a budget for the upcoming year. The Town Council will ultimately vote on a budget.

2. Budget presentation in Meriden

The Meriden City Council will meet remotely Monday. The meeting starts at 6:30 pm and can be accessed through the city’s website, meridenct.gov.

During the meeting the council will receive a presentation on the city’s proposed fiscal 2023 budget.

3. Camp voucher funding in Meriden

The Meriden council also will take up two matters that had previously been tabled. One of those items is a report from the Meriden American Rescue Plan Steering Committee recommending the council authorize allocating $600,000 in federal COVID-19 relief funds to provide summer camp vouchers to Meriden families this summer. The other item that had been tabled is a resolution to approve a tax abatement to developers for 289 Pratt St.

4. Loan for Thompson Brands in Meriden

The Meriden council will take up a third item, a request from Thompson Brands for a manufacturing assistance loan, after it was withdrawn from the agenda of the council’s previous meeting. The matter was withdrawn after procedural questions were raised about its referral to the council as a whole.

5. Historic Wallingford train station

The Wallingford Town Council will discuss setting aside funds to hire a design firm for the Historic Railroad Station during its Tuesday meeting, which is set to begin at 6:30 pm at the Town Hall.

6. State redistricting, ARPA report in Wallingford

The Wallingford council will also discuss approving a redistricting map and receive a report from a subcommittee created to determine how best to spend $13 million in federal pandemic relief funds.

7. Town Council public hearing on school spending in Cheshire

The Town Council is scheduled to hold a public hearing on the education budget at 7 pm on Tuesday in council chambers, 84 South Main St.
