Halton hosts Great Get Together in memory of Jo Cox MP

A group inspired by the work of the late MP Jo Cox is encouraging Halton residents to picnic or go for a walk as part of The Great Get Together.

From Friday to Sunday, June 18-20, a number of clubs and organizations will meet as part of the pandemic guidelines to share the simple pleasure of spending time with others.

Organizers said they would like to see residents post their photos and comments on their meetings on social media and tag them on More in Common Halton.

Events include a public walk from The Studio on Lacey Street in Widnes to Pickerings Pasture, which starts at 11am on Sunday, June 20th. Reservation is required, details below.

The festivities begin at 8 p.m. on Friday, June 18, when More in Common’s John Bostock and Keith Fielding take over the studio’s Facebook page to stream live an evening of Halton music called The Great Play Together, which will also advertise the district’s food banks.

From June 18 to July 3, Culture HQ in Runcorn Shopping City will host a photography exhibition hosted by Lauren Quayle, inspired by the More in Common movement and highlighting the work in the district of those who have gone the extra mile.

Participating organizations so far include Fortuna Female Society, A Better Tomorrow, Halton Play Council, Transform Widnes, Loose at The Studio, Victoria Park Environment Team, Halton and St Helens Voluntary and Community Action, and Halton Community Radio.

The More in Common movement was inspired by Labor MP Jo Cox, who was murdered by a far-right terrorist on June 16, 2016 and who was interested in promoting good relationships with communities while she was still alive.

It takes its name from Mrs Cox’s first speech in the House of Commons, in which she said to Parliament: “We are much more united and have much more in common than what divides us”.

Louise Nulty of The Studio said, “This is not about who has the biggest, loudest or longest event, it is about remembering the spirit behind the movement and sharing a moment of togetherness.”

She added, “We’d love to have more people involved, and we’re always looking for people to join the small meetups the organizers have to share ideas and resolve common event management issues. “
