Jackson, miss. – Scott Caraway was born in Jackson, MS, in 1965 and died peacefully in his sleep on May 21, 2021.
He was adopted from the Baptist Children’s Village, attended Jackson Academy in elementary school, and graduated from Jackson Preparatory High School in 1983. At Prep, Scott was a member of the choir group, participated in school plays and musicals, and served in other organizations during his school years.
After high school, Scott attended Mississippi State University. During his adult life, Scott worked for the limo industry in Dallas, Atlanta and his hometown of Jackson for many years. His love of art and interior design led him to open a gift shop, North Beach Interiors, based in Bay Saint Louis, MS. He also worked on Repeat Street, helping out with the retail and consignment industries. Frequent trips to New Orleans were his favorite pastime, as was his longstanding love for the International Ballet Competition, where he volunteered. Scott was a member of the Colonial Heights Baptist Church and attended Saint James Episcopal Church regularly throughout his adult life.
Scott’s focus in his adult years became his active membership in organizations that supported rescued dogs, particularly Cheshire Abbey, where he adopted Bailey and Gertie, his beloved four-legged companions. They gave strength and joy to Scott and gave it to everyone else through his lively, apologetic demeanor. All the work Scott had done in his life and all the charity he was so devoted to could never mean the comfort his friends received in Scott’s embrace. His wit, loyalty, kindness and generosity towards everything he met and especially towards his friends was second to none.
His 1983 Jackson Prep classmates were honored to have helped and cared for him for the past several years. His lifelong close friend and “funniest” partner of Prep 1983, Susan Bush Goodman and her husband Alan, gathered classmates quite often over the years with love, compassion, and camaraderie. Along with Scott’s cousin Charles Byram, the group supported Scott every step of the way and was collectively honored to be by his side when he needed them most. Accompanied by a relentless determination, these friends who became his family surely served as God’s saving grace to keep Scott in battle despite the constant health problems he endured during the last years of his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents Richard Aldon Caraway and Jerry Ann Byram Caraway; Sister Julie Caraway. Surviving relatives are his aunt Carole Byram; Cousins, Charles Byram and Kevin Byram, and Skylar Byram Casey and Sydney Byram.
The family and friends would like to thank the Saint Dominic’s Hospital, the Baptist Hospital, the Fresenius Kidney Care, the Brandon Court Nursing, their doctors and nurses as well as his family doctor Dr. Thank Clay Hays, a classmate of Scott’s, for the compassion and love that has been well deserved over the four years that he has been in her care. The family would also like to thank Cheshire Abbey Animal Rescue for taking in Scott’s beloved dogs, Bailey and Gertie.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Scott’s memory can be made to Cheshire Abbey, PO Box 16330, Jackson, MS, 39236 or St. James Episcopal Church 3921, Oak Ridge Drive, Jackson, MS 39216.
A service will be held on Wednesday, May 26, 2021 at 11 a.m. at Lakewood Memorial Park 6000 Clinton Boulevard in Jackson. A celebration of life for Scott is being hosted by his 1983 Jackson Prep Class high school friends and is scheduled for a later date.
