Cheshire residents jump in the county’s defense after scolding their mother

Cheshire residents came out on social media in defense of the county after a Mumsnet user toasted the area in a forum post.

The answer came after the woman who lives near Crewe said on the Internet that she “doesn’t know why people are raving about the county”.

The mother had moved to the area 14 years ago and described Crewe as a “dive” adding that she “bloody hates” the place.

The contribution read: “Well, actually we are semi-rural. Moved to Cheshire 14 years ago. Now we have two teenagers.

“(A kid) is fine here, friends, good social life, though pals are scattered across the county. (Others) not so happy, pals are also scattered across the county hating that he can’t just walk around To see you.

“The town we live in is a diver. I have a job here (not wonderfully paid, but it’s a job). (Husband) works in the county and will probably retire next year. No family here. Must travel out of town to get anywhere.

“I was just staying with a friend in the south and I feel particularly depressed now. So busy, diversity, life, etc. Bad decision on my part to move here, but I can’t stop or look back now (it’s in my DNA to make bad life decisions!)

“Does someone feel the same because they wish they could just flee and move somewhere else? it’s different now and i hate this city.

“I don’t want the whole ‘Well why did you move there?’ Please. Looking back is a wonderful thing! ”

Crewe Market Hall

The post sparked a strong reaction on social media, and many CheshireLive readers jumped on Facebook in defense of the county.

Lorraine Nightingale said: “I’ve lived here for 33 years, I’m originally from Scotland but I think Cheshire is beautiful, she wants to drive around this beautiful county.

“Drive around it’s beautiful, so many beautiful places to see if she’s so dissatisfied, just move around.”

Margaret Fortescue said, “I love living in Cheshire, moved here from Shropshire for 35 years. Cheshire is a lovely place to live, I wouldn’t go anywhere else.”

While many echoed these views about Cheshire, there were also those who particularly wanted to defend Crewe.

Claire Coombs said, “We moved to Crewe from Wiltshire and bought a nice house. We’d have to buy something massively smaller in other cities. Lots of positive things in Crewe.”

Cathy Maskery-Walsh said: “Crewe is about to rebuild, the funding has been agreed. Downtown may not be great at the moment, but if something goes wrong locally, the residents will all pull together.

“When a fire destroyed OAP homes the local response was amazing and heartwarming. When a young man needed funds for cancer treatment, Crewe summed up and the goals were met in no time.”

The city was also defended by the region’s MP Kieran Mullan, who said he would “support all along”.

“Crewe town center has had a tough time in recent years, but that’s changing,” he said.

“The new market hall is fantastic and we have to invest millions more euros.

“But we also have Queens Park, one of the best parks in the northwest, we have the Alex football field, Cumberland Arena, Crewe Lyceum.

“Most of all, we have a great community. I would support Crewe all the way.”
