If we look at the coronavirus picture in Cheshire, the news is mixed.
The infection rates seen in some parts of Cheshire over the past few weeks appear to be on the decline again.
According to data released by Public Health England, Cheshire East overall, as well as areas of Northwich and Winsford – where outbreaks have occurred in recent weeks – have seen their infection rates decline.

The news comes as new measures such as shock testing and maximizing vaccine uptake are introduced in Cheshire to combat the Delta variant as well as in other parts of the country including Birmingham and Liverpool.
The package includes additional support in Cheshire East, Cheshire West and Chester, Warrington, Halton, Liverpool City Region and Blackpool.
Looking into the distance, the Delta variant, which was first identified in India, has risen 79% in a week, Public Health England (PHE) said across the country.
Dr. Jenny Harries, chief executive of the UK Health Security Agency, said the surge across the UK is being driven by younger age groups, many of whom have now been invited to vaccinate as vaccination extends to anyone aged 18 and over.
Hospital cases have also almost doubled, although most patients in need of treatment have not received a vaccine.
The Prime Minister said he was “very confident” that remaining coronavirus restrictions in England will be lifted on July 19th.
At Kirklees College in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, Boris Johnson said, “I am very confident that we will be able to finish step four of the timetable that I have said for treating the 19th as I said. I think that’s certainly what the data continues to show. “
Here we look at the current picture in Cheshire, case numbers, hospital admissions and deaths.
Case rates
Cheshire West and Chester have a rolling rate of 117.2 cases per 100,000 population for a total of 402 cases
The picture in Cheshire West is mixed, there are a number of areas where infection rates are starting to decline again after outbreaks while other areas are rising sharply.
Chester City and Garden Quarter has seen a particularly sharp surge and now has a roll rate of 342.3 with 34 new cases – 29 more than last week.
In Weaverham, near Northwich, there is a rolling rate of 208.8 with 13 cases – 10 more than last week.
However, the picture is improving in other parts of Northwich, with Hartford and Kingsmead seeing a 47.6 percent decrease in cases compared to a week ago.
Davenham and Moulton saw a 47.1 percent decrease while Northwich Central and Winnington saw a 15 percent decrease.
The picture at Winsford has also improved a lot after an outbreak believed to have originated from Winsford Academy was brought under control.
Winsford Central saw a 39.5% decrease in cases and a rolling rate of 366.9 – up from more than 600 a week ago.
Winsford Over saw a 35.7% decrease in cases and Winsford Glebe Green a 40% decrease.
Cheshire East has a rolling rate of 114 cases per 100,000 population – with 438 active cases
Cheshire East may have turned around in terms of infections as the district saw a modest 3.7% drop in cases, the first drop in more than a month.
Macclesfield cases are declining, with a 40.6% decrease in Macclesfield East and Hurdsfield, a 35.3% decrease in Macclesfield South and Lyme Green, and a 31.2% decrease in Bollington.
Case numbers seem to be regaining control in Wilmslow and there are little increases in Crewe and Nantwich.
Warrington has a rolling rate of 159.5 cases per 100,000 and 335 active cases
The picture in Warrington is less encouraging than in other parts of Cheshire.
Warrington has seen Covid cases double this week with 168 new infections, bringing the total cases to 335.
Central Warrington saw cases increase 166.7% and now has a rolling rate of 206.5.
Culcheth East and Hollins Green saw a 266.7% increase and Appleton a 200% increase.
Halton has a rolling rate of 70.3 and 91 active cases
After many weeks in which Covid almost disappeared in Halton, cases are on the rise again.
Widnes Riverside now has a rolling rate of 111.9 cases per 100,000 population, while Runcorn Town and Westfield have a rate of 75.6.
Hospital admissions
Hospital admissions are recorded by the NHS Trust, not geographic area, and the news is encouraging across the county.
While the number of cases in Cheshire has increased, hospital admissions have not followed – a sign that the vaccination program is working.
Countess of Chester NHS Trust
There are currently three people in the hospital here, two of whom are currently being ventilated.
East Cheshire NHS Trust
East Cheshire does not currently have any approvals.
This is a decrease from the high of 110 entries on January 24th.
Mid Cheshire NHS Trust
The Trust has five recent admissions, up from the 13 hospitalized in late May.
However, this is a significant improvement over the 140 entries on January 10th.
Warrington and Halton Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust
At the moment this trust only has two current approvals.
A sharp drop from the high of 165 people hospitalized with coronavirus on Jan. 12.
Deaths
There has only been one death from Covid in all of Cheshire this week – in Cheshire East.
