Mallorca and Ibiza are restoring the restrictions on Covid nightlife for British tourists

Government officials in the Balearic Islands have turned around and reinstated a number of restrictions in a desperate attempt to reverse the rise in Covid infections.

British visitors to the popular holiday hotspots Mallorca, Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera will be confronted with the strict new rules starting this week, as the number of people who are allowed to meet for social gatherings will be enforced.

From this Saturday, all events in which no people from the same household are involved will be banned for the next 14 days.

As of this Thursday, restaurants will have to close at 1 a.m., reducing the number of people allowed to sit at a table.

This will be reduced to eight instead of twelve people per table outdoors and four instead of six people indoors. This measure affects bars, restaurants, cocktail bars, music cafes and venues.

However, the Balearic government has decided against reintroducing compulsory face covering in public areas. It is recommended to wear them outdoors and only take them off when social distancing can be ensured.

Access to beaches and parks will also be banned after 10 p.m.

The number of positive cases in the Balearic Islands is already beginning to decline. The Ministry of Health reported 493 cases on Monday – the third day in a row that infections have declined.

Tourism Minister Jago Negueruela said: “The aim is to combat excesses and to maintain economic activity in safe conditions.”

The tough new measures follow reports of large illegal gatherings of young people for parties and raves.

In other areas of Spain where Covid cases are on the rise, curfews have already been reinstated.
