Benjamin Mendy, a Manchester City football star, was charged Thursday with quadruple rape and one sexual assault, British police said.
Mendy, 27, has been arrested and will remain behind bars until at least his first hearing on Friday, the Crown Protection Service said in a press release.
The charges are related to three alleged victims, according to police. The first crime occurred in October 2020 and the most recent this month, according to police.
According to police, the attacks took place in Cheshire, a county south of Manchester in north-west England.
Manchester City has suspended Mendy on the investigation. The club said it had no further comment as “the matter is under legal process”.
Mendy, a defender, joined the English super club in 2017 with a £ 52million transfer from Monaco. He started in one of the team’s two games so far this season and played 13 games in Manchester City’s title-winning campaign last year, scoring two goals.
