I just found out about a cool monthly event that the City of Meriden and the Meriden Parks & Recreation Department have come up with for summer 2021. They call it Castle Craig Full Moon Viewings and if you love the beautiful scenery Connecticut has to offer and dance with the devil in the pale moonlight, you’re in luck.
Connecticut is home to a number of towers built on some of its tallest mountain peaks. One that most of you are likely to know, especially if you are an ’84 commuter, is Castle Craig in Meriden. You’ve probably seen it in the distance if you’ve been driving through Cheshire on I-84, or anywhere along 691. Below, I’ve circled the mountain as seen from I-84 East at Exit 26 in Cheshire.
Castle Craig is part of Meriden’s Hubbard Park, which is also home to Meriden’s famous Daffodil Festival. The Tower sits on top of the mountain’s East Peak, rises to a height of 300 meters and, on a clear day, offers incredible views of the Connecticut River Valley, from Long Island Sound to Massachusetts.
Meriden Parks and Recreation will take advantage of this incredible plus and its breathtaking views and offer the public a free monthly event – Castle Craig Full Moon Viewings and the first will take place tonight, Thursday June 24th, 2021.
Basically, Meriden Parks & Rec will keep the park open tonight and once a month on the full moon night for the duration of the summer of 2021 so that the public can enjoy the beautiful view that the powerful light of a full moon offers.
At 6:30 am this evening, head up the Craig Castle access road to the car park. Parking is limited so be aware. Bring a chair or blanket and comfortable shoes. It takes approximately a 10-15 minute walk to get to the castle and enjoy the views, your neighbor’s company, and a great evening here in Connecticut. The park remains open until 9:30 a.m., but after 8:30 p.m. nobody is allowed to go up to the castle.
If you can’t make it to the full moon tonight, the rest of the year schedule for Castle Craig’s full moon tours are: If the weather is nice, Saturday July 24th, Sunday August 22nd, Tuesday September 21st, and Wednesday April 20th October 2021.
