Scotland in winter is synonymous with rain and snow – but at Christmas a new campaign starts with magical hikes, snow-covered paths and breathtaking views.
A new winter timetable has been developed by membership organization Wild Scotland to inspire travelers to explore breathtaking locations from the Lochs of Assynt to the Mull of Kintyre. It also aims to showcase the most scenic undiscovered regions and help local businesses stay open during the winter months.
A wide range of activities are on the program, from stargazing in dark sky observation spots, winter animal viewing with expert guides, night snorkeling, guided winter mountaineering and wilderness camping in hot tents.
The schedule will be available through Wild Scotland, who represents wildlife, adventure and activity tourism operators across Scotland who also highlight how to respect the wilderness and how to vacation responsibly and sustainably.
Doug McAdam of Wild Scotland said, “Scotland in winter can be breathtaking, but many are put off by the wild weather we usually get every year. In light of international travel uncertainties and local lockdowns across Europe, we have developed a variety of activities to provide memorable, safe adventures and enable visitors and locals alike to experience Scotland like they have never seen it before – regardless of the weather .
“We know that winter can be a mentally difficult time of year for many, especially now that Covid is constantly dominating the headlines.

“But the short, tingly days and long, cold nights are perfect for these activities – perfect for exploring open spaces, meeting new people, connecting with nature and escaping from everyday stress.
“It is a scientific fact that daylight is essential for well-being and mental health; something that is well understood in countries in northern latitudes with very limited daylight in winter, where people know the importance of being outdoors and maximizing daylight exposure.

“Scotland is a year-round destination to enjoy, especially with the abundance of warm and fancy accommodations. We are sure that this year will be our wildest winter. “
The campaign is led by Wild Scotland, which is committed to promoting sustainable wildlife, adventure and activity tourism in Scotland to create meaningful and lasting environmental and social change.
