Cheshire East Council has refused plans to demolish a former rock and metal nightclub in Crewe – one the grounds it would lose a ‘Local Heritage Asset.’
The decision to refuse a residential block of flats for Dante’s Rock & Metal Club, Gatefield Street, was confirmed on Wednesday (November 23).

A small retail unit/office would have been constructed – along with a new access off Gatefield Street.
100 Victoria Street and 2-4 Gatefield Street was added to the Crewe Town Council Local Asset Register.
It was once the home of Dr Richard Lord – Crewe’s first Medical Officer of Health.
The buildings special interest has been identified as being of historical interest.
This is due to its historic links with a nationally important person.

Dante’s Rock & Metal Club was also previously a restaurant, pub and former British Legion Club.
A Cheshire East Planning Department case officer agreed the proposals had to be refused.
They said: “The retention of the building was encouraged at the pre-application stage as a more sustainable development.
“Since the pre-app, Crewe Town Council have listed the existing building as a Local Heritage Asset and have proposed its inclusion within the Cheshire East Local List of important buildings.
“The Heritage officer has raised concerns that the submission lacks the level of detailed information required to fully access the loss of the building.
Dante’s Rock & Metal Club was also previously a restaurant, pub and former British Legion Club (Cheshire East Planning).
“It has given no mention of the historical link to Dr Richard Lord, and the context of the surrounding Victorian buildings.”
Following a number of objections to its original application, Yates revised the Crewe residential scheme in February 2022.
This revision didn’t tackle Crewe Town Council’s objections towards local heritage and design.
The Cheshire East case officer added: “The loss of the building would he harmful to the street scene and the setting of the listed building and locally listed buildings.”

Dante’s Rock & Metal Club officially opened in August 2009 – replacing the former Eden Club.
The Crewe Hightown nightclub has been permanently closed for close to a decade.
